Image & Specification Guidelines

Learn about the imagery and image specifications that can be uploaded to Zedonk.

You can upload your company logo to the system, ensuring it appears on all documents generated by Zedonk. The file must be a JPEG (Standard 24-bit format). Max Size 1Mb. Max Dimensions 1000x1000 px. For more information on how to upload your Company Logo.

Product Images

Once a product has been created, Zedonk allows for the upload of three distinct image types: Image 1, the Production Image, and the Labels Image. These images are then automatically incorporated when printing Line Sheets, Sales Order Line Sheets, Sales Order documents, and Production Orders (Dockets). The standard Zedonk package includes the functionality to upload one JPEG or PNG image per product.

Please refer to the guidelines below concerning optimal image size and format.

'Image 1'

This will be the covering image of the product on commercial documents, such as your line sheets, sales orders, and the sales app.

'Production' Image

This will be the product image used for your production documents:

  • Style: 'Production Order List'
  • Style: 'Docket'

'Labels' Image

The 'Labels' image will be included in your production documents:

  • Style: 'Docket'

Product Image Size

  • Shape: Square
  • File Type: JPEG (Standard 24-bit) / PNG
  • Maximum Dimensions: 2000 x 2000 pixels
  • Maximum Resolution: 150 dpi
  • Maximum File Size: 2MB

It's important to distinguish between two key measures of an image: its file size (measured in bytes, e.g., 800 KB) and its dimensions (the print space it occupies, best measured in pixels, e.g., 600 x 600).

When Zedonk prepares images for inclusion in documents, it automatically reduces larger images to fit the designated space. However, it will not enlarge an image if it's too small. This functionality provides creative flexibility while preventing images from overflowing the page.

Crucially, when a large image is reduced to fit, this scaling is performed by the PDF reader, and the original full-size image remains embedded within the PDF file. Consequently, larger original images result in significantly larger document file sizes (e.g., for linesheets). While an image exceeding 450 x 450 pixels will be reduced visually, the overall file size will still be unnecessarily large.

Therefore, our recommendation is to size images between 300 and 450 pixels on their longest edge, at 150 dpi. This offers the optimal balance between manageable file size and excellent image quality. While lower resolutions, down to 74 dpi, may appear acceptable on screen, their print quality will noticeably suffer.

Separately, when creating (saving) a JPEG file, you can control the level of compression. More compression leads to a greater loss of quality. This setting is distinct from the image format or dimensions. Your chosen software will typically allow you to set a default compression/quality level, often expressed as a percentage (e.g., 100% for no compression), or select one appropriate for the specific image content.

Image Format

For best performance and compatibility, all images must be RGB files and in JPEG (Standard 24-bit format) or PNG format.

JPEG is an efficient compression method, producing relatively small files while maintaining good quality. While compression factors down to 20 can still yield reasonable quality, the maximum compression achievable before noticeable quality loss varies by image type; photographs generally compress better than line drawings. Nevertheless, all images should reproduce well with a JPEG compression factor of 40-50.

It is advisable to aim for image file sizes in the 6 to 15 KB (Kilobytes) range. Bear in mind the impact of larger files: for example, a 20-page linesheet with four images per sheet could exceed 2 MB (Megabytes) if each image is 25 KB. This size approaches the limits of many email systems, and transferring such substantial data volumes will naturally take more time. Occasionally, an image may need to be larger, and up to 25 KB is generally acceptable, but on average, it's feasible to keep files below 15 KB.
